Zahra Moulay Lakhdar, craftswoman and president of the Algerian women’s arts and crafts foundation

Zahra Moulay Lakhdar is a craftswoman who began initially to draw spontaneously on pottery and stone. Her talents were noticed by her uncle Miloud who encouraged her to persevere in this direction. She learned a lot in his company and developed her own art and craftsmanship even if her know-how was mainly acquired in a self-taught way. Zohra did not attend the fine arts academy but she never stopped drawing, her works were regularly exhibited at the oasis cultural center, in the city’s craft stores, and with the Res’Art shop. She had the opportunity to exhibit in March 2004 at the Maison de la Culture in Algiers and in December 2005 at the international tourism fair in Tamanrasset. She has been collaborating since 2009 in the production of models and the setting up of museum exhibitions.

Res’Art (the network of Algerian craftswomen has worked in the context of networking with craftswomen for more than 20 years on training, support and improvement of craft production.
Training in Digital Marketing for the artisans of the association Tiziri Anagh

The craftswomen after 20 years of membership in the network wished to create their own grouping structure in the form of a foundation whose headquarters is in Timimoun to continue in the accompaniment, the improvement of the work of craftswomen, and the creation of a cooperative, around art and crafts in Algeria; Thus taking up the torch of the network.

The foundation to create has the name Res’ArtIM diminutive of “Network of craftswomen and art of Algerian women”.

While picking grapes, dates, the production of jams, other local products, they contribute to the promotion of artistic products and women’s crafts. Members and adherents active since 2003 in the network, President Zahra Moulay and her colleague Farida Lamari, coordinator and trainer, work to support women in Timimoun, to promote their creativity and to organize meetings with other women in art and creation. Their first action is training in digital marketing from which the Tiziri Anagh association will benefit. This first action aims to use new technologies in order to modernize, improve and facilitate activities and give visibility to associative crafts and women artisans. To enable them to strengthen all the actions leading to the professionalization of art, crafts and women’s heritage.

The Res’Art International team has been working for years on women’s crafts in the Maghreb and has also been interested for a decade in rural women with specific skills. Res’Art International is a network of craftswomen, artists and talented women who seek to highlight the tangible and intangible heritage of Algeria, Morocco and Tunisia and to enhance their contribution to Maghreb, Mediterranean and African heritage. We discovered during our travels that the women who produce (crafts, local products, art) often sing, tell stories or say poetry while they work. We have the project to collect videos and audios of these sound productions which carry cultures, beliefs, legends and oral tradition. The women sing or recite in different dialects mixing Arabic, Berber, French, Spanish or Italian depending on the region. We want to give the world to understand this intangible heritage which is disappearing, because the transmission from generation to generation is in decline.
